The Interim Chairman, Ahmed Nuur Arlaadi, today issued the following statement on the 25th commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda:

7 April 1994 marks the beginning of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda perpetrated by the Hutu extremist-led government. Within the following 100 days, more than 800,000 members of the Tutsi minority were systematically murdered. Moderate Hutu and others who opposed the killings were also killed during that period. In 2003, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed 7 April the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

“On this solemn day, we join the Rwandan people and the international community to remember and pay tribute to all those who lost their lives in the genocide. We offer our deepest sympathies to their families and loved ones, and to everyone living with the pain and trauma caused by these atrocities.

25 years later Rwanda is in many ways a transformed country thanks to the determination of the people of Rwanda to rebuild both their lives and their country, and to pursue national reconciliation.  I ask all Somalis to take time today to remember those who lost their lives twenty-five years ago. We can honour them by fighting hate, protecting the most vulnerable, and working to make our world a better one.”
