There’s no measure of success quite like getting your likeness on the cover of a leading, legendary magazine.

In addition to winning election to Congress last week, state Rep. Ilhan Omar has done exactly that, appearing on the front of the latest issue of The New Yorker.

She’s part of a cover story – “Barry Blitt’s ‘Welcome to Congress’,” in reference to the artist who illustrates the covers the magazine is famous for – celebrating the female political candidates who made electoral history this year.

On Tuesday, Omar was one of two candidates (the other being Rashida Tlaib of Michigan) to become the first Muslim women elected to Congress, and in addition, will be the first Somali-American U.S. House member.

As the Washington Post notes, the illustration is a “creative spin on ‘white space’,” depicting “a dominant swath of literally white men that begins to yield to a splash of color as women enter the picture.”

Omar, 36, will be sworn in to Congress to represent Minnesota’s 5th District in January.
