Ethiopia and Russia have agreed to set up a joint nuclear technology center, which will be used for peaceful and development purposes.“We have also discussed ways to cooperate on various sectors, including in setting up nuclear a technology center, education, science, and technology,” Ethiopia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Workneh Gebeyehu said, in joint press briefing with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Addis Ababa.

He said the nuclear center development programme will be launched right after an agreement is concluded in the near future between the two countries.

Ethiopia’s relations with Russia dates back 120 years ago, when Russia offered scholarship for about 13,000 Ethiopian students.

“We agreed to strengthen economic, trade and investment relations between the two countries,” he said.

The two foreign ministers also discussed how to jointly combat terrorism and extremism in the Horn of Africa and 

Lavrov said his visit was aimed at boosting trade and investment ties between the two countries. Russia wants to work together with Ethiopia in nuclear technology and power generation, he announced.

Russia will provided support for Ethiopia in various sector, including skills and technical support for its military, he said, adding that work will be carried out to strengthen institutional ties between the two countries.

Lavrov also announced that Russia has cancelled a $162 million debt owed by Ethiopia.
