Unfriendly relations with media in Somalia

February 19, 2019| Arlaadi Online

Journalists in Mogadishu decry restriction by government on access to information by providing edited clips rather than allowing them gather news freely. Information minister promises a meeting to address the issue.

Media in the world’s democratic countries is treated with respect as the fourth organ of government. Its activities are always developed and promoted, not suppressed. Somalia also claims to be a democratic nation in the making, at least in principle.

Minister Gelle, give freedom to the Media and open up the government for the Media to access reliable information. Otherwise you may risk reading government news based on sources of speculations and gossiping.

“If a nation expects to be ignorant & free, in a state of civilisation, it expects what never was & never will be. Where the press is free and every man able to read, all is safe.” ― Thomas Jefferson,

“Our democracy depends on an informed citizenry to survive, Your Honor. Besides the advancement of truth, science and morality in general, the freedom of the press is a backbone of democracy. It exists to keep the government transparent, and the human instruments of government honest.” ― Kenneth Eade
